  DIVERSITAS  proposes an integrated research framework to the international scientific community. The Programme is a partnership of inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations formed to promote, facilitate and catalyse scientific research on biodiversity–its origin, composition, ecosystem function, maintenance and conservation.

  The goal of DIVERSITAS is to provide accurate scientific information and predictive models of the status of biodiversity, to find ways to support a more sustainable use of the Earth’s biotic resources, and to build a world-wide capacity for biodiversity science.   The Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP) was founded in 1997 as a small, mainly voluntary partnership programme, by three international organizations: IUCN - The World Conservation Union, CAB International, and the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE). In early 2005, GISP was constituted as a legal entity with Founding Members IUCN, CAB International, The Nature Conservancy, and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

  The GISP Secretariat was established in 2003 at Kirstenbosch to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the Global Strategy on Invasive Alien Species. Start-up funding to meet core costs were provided by The World Bank though the Bank-Nederlands Partnership Programme and Development Grant Facility, allowing the employment of a small team of professionals and the delivery of several priority projects.

  The akronym CELTIC stands for a metapopulation concept for lynx populations of Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.

  An international group of experts from these countries are elaborating models to connect lynx populations and defragment wildlife habitats to secure long-term survival of this big cat in a cultural landscape.

• SEBI2010 - Streamlining European 2010 Biodiversity Indicators

  A Pan European initiative, SEBI2010 (Streamlining European 2010 Biodiversity Indicators), was launched in 2004. Its aim is to develop a European set of biodiversity indicators to assess and inform about progress towards the European 2010 targets.

  The work is performed in collaboration between EEA (the European Environment Agency), DG Environment of the European Commission, ECNC (the European Centre for Nature Conservation), UNEP/ PEBLDS Secretariat with the lead of Czech Republic and UNEP-WCMC (the World Conservation Monitoring Centre).  Work is lead by a Coordination Team.

  In 2005 the Coordination Team and 6 Expert groups involving more than 100 experts nominated by European countries as well as non Governmental Organisations started working for the compilation of a First European Set of Biodiversity Indicators for assessing the 2010 target.

  As a contribution to the International Day for Biological Diversity, an online summary of the second edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-2) has been launched today in collaboration with GreenFacts.   GBO-2, published last year by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, takes stock of the Earth’s biodiversity, analyses the factors leading to biodiversity loss, and advocates key interventions that would reduce pressure on the natural environment.
